Everything, Roy thought.

Emotions surged up in him like an incoming storm: terror and grief and guilt and rage and love and—

Not now.

If he let himself feel anything, he’d end up feeling everything, and then he’d lose it. He’d fall apart like he had when he’d heard DJ was missing. And then he’d be useless to her.

He sucked in a deep breath. As he slowly let it out, he took himself to that cool clear place where he could act and feel nothing but the rightness of action. He was a warrior. He was a wolf. He was a weapon. He was strong and hard and not afraid.

Roy hastily prioritized his objectives. Laura’s life wasn’t in danger this exact instant, but it would be soon. His first step had to be to get them out of easy reach of the enemy, in a way that left Roy capable of protecting and caring for her.

“Can you walk?” Roy asked.

“I think so,” Laura replied. “I was driving with that foot. But Gregor’s not following us. When I was pulling out, he yelled that he wouldn’t chase me down because he wanted to see me come crawling back to him.”

“It’s a trick. Why the hell would you do that?”

“I think he was serious,” Laura said. “Let’s get out of here. I’ll explain on the way.”

Roy hurried round to Laura’s side. In the time it took him to get around the hood, he had the wild hope that she was so calm because she wasn’t hurt at all. Maybe he’d shot Gregor before he’d managed to break her skin.

He knelt beside the open door. A neat set of small puncture wounds circled Laura’s ankle, and trickles of blood flowed down over her bare foot. The injury was minor, and when he jerked his gaze up to Laura’s face, he saw that her eyes were as bright and her lips were as pink as ever. It was as if she’d been bitten by a poisonous snake, and the venom hadn’t yet reached her heart. But it was only a matter of time.

Roy grabbed her hands, squeezing tight. Maybe it was his imagination, but they felt colder than usual. “You’re going to make it. I did, and you will too. I’ll coach you through it. In a safe place. The last thing you need is for Gregor to sneak up on you when you’re trying to change.”

Laura nodded, biting her lip. Lemon juice. Acid. “Okay.”

“On second thought, don’t walk. You should save your strength. I’ll carry you.”

“But I—But you—” Laura broke off in a startled squeak as Roy scooped her out of the car, cradling her to his chest, and set off quickly through the forest.

“Aren’t I too heavy?” Laura asked.

“Obviously not.” Roy meant to be supportive, but it came out brusque. The idea that she’d be thinking of her weight at a time like this made his eyes sting with unshed tears. He took a deep breath, forcing them back. He had to be strong for her.
